Five Pointers for Taking Pets on Vacation

Finding a reliable pet sitter or kennel for your four-legged friends when planning a vacation may be difficult, to say the least. It's one of the main reasons so many pet owners choose to travel with their animal companions, even on cross-country journeys. The whole family may have a lot of fun traveling with pets, but it does require some preparation. You can make your subsequent trip a success by using the five suggestions in this article.

1. Get Ready for Your Vacation

Get Ready for Your Vacation

You should do the following three tasks well in advance of your major trip:

Make sure your pet is healthy enough to travel first. Take your pet to the vet for a general checkup before you go. Make sure their immunizations are current. Obtain a copy of their vaccination records to bring with you, and if you intend to travel by air, obtain a health certificate as well. Make sure you have enough of any medications they take to last the duration of your vacation if they do.

Second, get a durable collar, leash, and ID tags for your pet. Every time you bring your pet somewhere new and strange, there is a danger they could become lost. Make sure your pet ID tags are up to date with all the relevant information, including your name and phone number, to increase your chances of recovering your pet in an emergency.

Third, prepare a travel crate. You'll probably need to have a pet carrier prepared for the journey whether you're taking the vehicle or the airline. Ensure that your pet can turn around and stand up in the container. Additionally, it should have a leak-proof bottom that is preferable lined with an absorbent material, such as potty pads, and be adequately ventilated. Just before leaving, throw in your pet's favorite mat, toy, and water bottle.

2. Travel Requirements for Research

Travel Requirements for Research

You must prepare for your trip in advance, whether you are using a car or an aircraft. Call the airline in advance to find out the requirements for bringing your pet with you if you're flying. While some airlines only permit animals to travel in the cargo hold, others let you bring small dogs or cats inside the cabin with you. This might not be the best mode of transportation for your dog or cat if they are ill or elderly. Find out what documentation your veterinarian needs from you, whether you need a special crate or carrier, and whether the lodging locations you are considering are pet-friendly. Making these arrangements in advance will greatly reduce the stress of your trip.

3. Planning a Road Trip

Planning a Road Trip

Get your pet accustomed to automobile rides by taking shorter excursions around town before making the Florida to California drive with him. Make sure to stop frequently (every few hours) on your road journey for snacks and bathroom breaks. Keep plenty of fresh water accessible at all times throughout the journey to prevent dehydration (and that goes for both the two- and four-legged travelers). Never leave a pet alone in a closed vehicle. Even brief stays inside an enclosed car, particularly in the summer, can be lethal. Last but not least, keep dogs away from the driver to avoid getting into an accident. This can be achieved by putting your pet in a box, placing a barrier in front of the driver's seat, or using a harnessed pet seat belt system.

4. Be Conscious of Your Travel Etiquette

Be Conscious of Your Travel Etiquette

When staying at a hotel that welcomes pets, show respect for the employees, the establishment, and other guests. During your visit, try to keep your pet as quiet as you can. Always clean up after your dog and choose a good place to walk it. Try to avoid leaving your pet alone in a room because they could become agitated, bark nonstop, or even damage hotel property.

Public Manners: Always observe local pet policies whether stopping at rest areas, restaurants, or convenience stores along the journey. Always clean up your dog's messes after a stroll.
